After two successful seasons in the USFL and one in the XFL, unsourced reports by some news websites suggest that the two spring leagues are in serious talks to merge their operations.
Although neither entity have been willing to name their sources, both sports business blog, Sportico, and quick news digest site, Axois, both claim that they have a person, or persons, inside one of the companies that have suggested a merger is imminent.
According to the former, the merger is designed so that the new combined entity might utilise the advantages and resources of both leagues in a calculated strategic manoeuvre to establish a more formidable front as an NFL alternative. The proposed combination, which is being referred to as a “merger of equals,” is expected to need regulatory approval. If all goes according to plan, football fans may get to see the union of these two titans before the 2024 season starts, a move reminiscent of the NFL/AFL merger in 1966.
Speaking to Axios, the XFL noted that they “will not comment on rumours and speculation.”
This is a developing story. Stay tuned to JEZ Sports as more news on the merger comes to light in the coming days.
